ONE MISSION MAN
An American POW’s Struggle to Survive Hitler’s Nazi Prison Camp
By David Ririe with Roger W. Nielsen and Carolyn Ririe Nielsen
$19.95
After enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and training diligently for months as a bombardier, David Ririe spends only one day in combat. On his first—and last—mission, his plane is shot down. Crashing on a military reserve outside Rostock, Germany, he is immediately seized by German soldiers who send him to the notorious interrogation center, Dulag Luft. He is assigned to Stalag Luft 1, an isolated prisoner of war camp for officers along the Baltic coast in northern Germany. For the next 13 months, Ririe struggles to survive Nazi brutality.
In One Mission Man, Ririe describes the patriotism of small-town America as it prepares for war, the training necessary for individual survival, and the harsh reality of combat and capture by the enemy. Then the imprisonment: living in overcrowded, stark, unheated barracks, surviving on a daily ration of thin turnip soup and coarse brown bread, suffering the misery of wet winter weather in inadequate clothing, coping with unrelenting boredom, and repeatedly digging tunnels unsuccessfully to escape. Although liberated by the Russians, the long sought for freedom initiates anarchy and chaos, death and destruction, as 9,000 ex-POWs, anxious to move forward with their lives, strain against the boundaries placed by their leaders committed to protect them. Each day filled with uncertainty, Ririe tells how POWs brought meaning to life through humor, mutual support, educational programs, sports, regular church attendance, and an abiding faith. All of these images are brightened in the work of Ririe as he addresses his feelings, his experiences, and the world events that forged his character. Cover design by Ethan Nielsen Arts
